TikTok Shop sellers and Making Tax Digital

Last updated 28 October 2026. Every fact below is checked against the sources listed at the end. General information, not tax advice.

Short answer: Only if you're trading and your qualifying income is over the threshold. If you're selling your own personal possessions you probably don't have to pay Income Tax on them. Selling a single item (or a set) for more than £6,000 may mean Capital Gains Tax. If you sell goods you bought intending to sell for a profit, or goods you made (including items made as a hobby), you're probably trading. Add this to any other trading income; if the total is over the £1,000 trading allowance for the tax year, you need to tell HMRC. MTD for Income Tax then uses the same thresholds as for any other sole trader. If your 2025 to 2026 tax return shows qualifying income over £30,000, you need to use MTD for Income Tax from 6 April 2027.

Platform reporting isn't your tax record

Since 1 January 2024, UK digital platform operators may need to collect and check sellers' details and report them, with the seller's income from the platform, to HMRC. Your details won't be reported if you make fewer than 30 sales of goods in a calendar year and receive less than €2,000 (about £1,700) for them. Platforms must give you a copy of what they report. It shows your total for the calendar year less fees, commission or taxes deducted by the platform, split into calendar quarters. It doesn't automatically mean you owe tax and it doesn't replace your own business records. If you do need to tell HMRC about your income, you work it out for the tax year (6 April to 5 April), not the calendar year the platform reports.

More in digital platform reporting and MTD.

Worked example: a reseller's year

Example figures Someone who buys stock to resell on TikTok Shop. Made-up figures for a fictional seller, not real data.

LineAmount
Gross sales£24,200.00
Refunds−£300.00
Turnover£23,900.00
TikTok Shop fees−£2,640.00
Paid out£21,260.00

Turnover (£23,900.00) is over the £1,000 trading allowance, so this seller needs to tell HMRC, but it's under £30,000, so on these figures alone MTD wouldn't start in April 2027. If the same turnover were on the 2026 to 2027 return, the £20,000 test would mean MTD from April 2028.

Questions

TikTok Shop says it reported me to HMRC. Do I owe tax?

Not automatically. Platforms must give you a copy of what they report. It shows your total for the calendar year less fees, commission or taxes deducted by the platform, split into calendar quarters. It doesn't automatically mean you owe tax and it doesn't replace your own business records.

Is this a new tax?

HMRC has said platform reporting is not a new tax and no tax rules have changed for people selling unwanted items.

When do I need to register for Self Assessment?

If your gross trading income for the tax year is more than £1,000, you need to register for Self Assessment.
