MTD quarterly update 1 of 2027 to 2028: due 7 August 2027

Last updated 28 October 2026. Every fact below is checked against the sources listed at the end. General information, not tax advice.

Short answer: Update 1 for 2027 to 2028 is due by 7 August 2027. With standard periods it covers 6 April 2027 to 5 July 2027 (with calendar periods, 1 April 2027 to 30 June 2027). Each quarterly update covers the tax year so far: from the start of the tax year to the end of the update period.

What this update covers

The new transactions in this update are those dated 6 April 2027 to 5 July 2027; the update also repeats everything since 6 April 2027. If your 2025 to 2026 tax return shows qualifying income over £30,000, you need to use MTD for Income Tax from 6 April 2027. For that group this is the first update ever sent.

Checklist from your platform files

  • Etsy: monthly statements for each month touching 6 Apr 2027 to 5 Jul 2027, split by date (Etsy files).
  • eBay: a Transaction report with exactly these dates (eBay files).
  • Amazon: every Flat File V2 settlement overlapping the period, split by posted-date (Amazon files).
  • Shopify and PayPal: transaction exports for the date range (Shopify, PayPal).
  • Costs paid elsewhere, such as stock and packaging.

You don't need to make accounting or tax adjustments before sending a quarterly update.

If it's late

For tax years after 2026 to 2027, each missed quarterly update or tax return deadline gets a penalty point (only one point per deadline, even with several businesses). At 4 points you get a £200 penalty, and another £200 for each further missed deadline. If you're below the 4-point threshold, each point is removed automatically 24 months after the missed deadline.
