Vinted · MTD for Income Tax

Do I need Making Tax Digital if I sell on Vinted?

Last reviewed 28 October 2026 against GOV.UK guidance. General information, not tax advice.

Short answer: Usually not, if you're selling your own unwanted things. HMRC says selling personal possessions is generally not trading, and MTD for Income Tax only applies to sole traders and landlords. If you buy items to resell or make things to sell, you're probably trading. Then your Vinted income counts towards qualifying income with any other trading or property income, and MTD applies once that's over the threshold on your return (over £30,000 for 2025 to 2026, so from 6 April 2027).

Clearing out vs trading

HMRC's online platforms guidance says you're probably trading if you sell goods you bought intending to sell for a profit, or goods you made. Its example is someone who starts regularly buying from car boot sales and charity shops to resell. Selling the contents of your wardrobe or loft is unlikely to be taxed. The exception is Capital Gains Tax, which can apply if you make a gain on a single possession sold for £6,000 or more.

If you are trading and your total gross trading income is £1,000 or less in a tax year, the trading allowance may mean you don't need to tell HMRC. Above that, you register for Self Assessment.

Vinted told me it reports to HMRC. What does that mean?

Since 1 January 2024, platforms collect seller details and report income to HMRC each January. Sellers aren't reported if they make fewer than 30 sales of goods and receive less than €2,000 (about £1,700) in a calendar year. HMRC is clear that being reported doesn't automatically mean you owe tax, and the tax rules for online sellers haven't changed.

The report is by calendar year (January to December). If you do need to report income, work it out for the tax year (6 April to 5 April).

If you're a Vinted reseller heading for MTD

Qualifying income is the total turnover from all your self-employment and property, before expenses. A reseller with £14,000 of Vinted sales, £12,000 on eBay and £5,000 of rent has £31,000 of qualifying income. That's over £30,000, even though no single source is.

Getting your sales data out of Vinted

Vinted doesn't offer a sales CSV download. You can request a copy of your account data instead.

  1. In the app, tap your profile icon and go to Settings.
  2. Select Privacy settings, then Manage account data, then Request data.
  3. Confirm using the link Vinted emails you (it expires after 24 hours).
  4. When the data is ready (Vinted says usually minutes, but it can take up to 30 days), download the ZIP. It contains HTML files, photos and PDFs.

Because the export isn't a spreadsheet, resellers usually have to build a sales list from it. Request it well before a deadline. Our converter doesn't read Vinted exports yet. If you need it, tick Vinted on the waitlist so we know.

Questions

Will I pay tax on my old clothes sold on Vinted?

Usually not. HMRC says selling personal items such as clothes, books and CDs doesn't mean you need to file a tax return or pay Income Tax. Capital Gains Tax can apply in rare cases, such as a gain on a single item sold for £6,000 or more.

What are Vinted's reporting thresholds?

You're reported if you make 30 or more sales of goods, or receive €2,000 (about £1,700) or more, in a calendar year. Being reported is not a tax bill.

I resell on Vinted part-time alongside a job. Does my salary count for MTD?

No. Qualifying income is your turnover from self-employment and property only. Employment income isn't included.
